This concert, entitled The other Pelléas, is made up of music by Arnold Schoenberg. It commences with Pelleas und Melisande, a symphonic poem for orchestra written during the composer´s youth (1902-1903) and first performed in Berlin in 1907. It was based on Maurice Maeterlinck´s play but when Schoenberg began work on it he was unaware that Claude Debussy had premiered an opera on the same theme in Paris. The Liceu has included it on the bill precisely because Debussy´s famous opera is also being performed here this season. The concert will be completed by Erwartung (Expectation), a half-hour long, one-act opera composed in 1909 to a libretto by Marie Pappenheim and premiered in Prague in 1924, which consists in a monologue for soprano and orchestra depicting the anguish of a woman who is waiting for her husband in the forest and ultimately finds him dead.
